Report on the Outing

(By Des Long)

This run was a trial for one of three outings to be programmed for the 2018 Barossa MX-5 National Meeting. What fabulous weather the God of Adelaide presented for us today.   25 degrees, no cloud, calm winds and a team of starters full of the joys of Spring - err... make that Autumn.

We all met at the ungodly hour of 9.15am at Lyndoch and followed a trail through Bethany, Mengler's Hill Eden Valley, Woodside and Oakbank to O'Leary Walker Wines (at the historic Johnston Brewery) for coffee and scones. Being a Wednesday, the roads were generally quiet wit only the usual season alroad work disruptions as Councils expend their residual funds before the end of the financial year.

Established in 1843, the Johnston company began manufacturing aerated waters, such as ginger beer, soda water and lemonade in 1867, before getting into the hotel and brewing business in the 1870s. The historic buildings are still in good repair today and in my view their is much more potential yet to be exploited.

Today, with the autumn trees  showing their vibrant reds and yellows in the sunlight, we could not have found a more pleasant and unhurried place to be for coffee.  As there were about 40 of us on the run, we did over tax the production rate for espresso coffee but that will be ironed out for the NATMEET.

It was then onward through some of the Adelaide Hills' prettiest places: Aldgate, Stirling Piccadilly, Lobethal and in to Golding Wines for lunch. Golding is not a big name in the status list of South Australian labels but the outdoor setting would match anything Europe might boast of  given the perfect weather we were gifted.

We thoroughly exploited the outdoor ambience with the last of us leaving about 4pm.

Given we could have 200 people for the NATMEET the committtee will review the suitability of this venue as we are very fortunate to have so many choices.
